P001 → Authentic Exotic

Where the ‘Authenticity’ of culture comes from? This project ask question for
focusing on misunderstanding and cultural appropriation of Asian food in Western culture.

'Authentic Exotic'

In this project, I curated a Pasta Set using ingredients frequently associated with Western cuisine, yet their origins trace back to regions beyond Europe. The collection is aptly named 'Authentic Exotic European Pasta Set.' This title serves as a critique of the Western tendency to romanticize Asian cultures while emphasizing authenticity, all the while engaging in indiscriminate consumption without a true understanding of the origins and essence of these cultures.

Artistic Approach

In the creation of the Authentic Exotic Pasta Set, I ingeniously transform everyday items into vessels of critique and contemplation. Each package design is meticulously altered with subtle yet impactful changes, such as misprinted cooking instructions or descriptions of the ingredient's true origins. This hidden layer of subversion encourages viewers to examine the cultural narratives that often lie beneath the surface of commercialized products.
Barilla Pasta -> Italian Spaghetti brought it from China
TWININGS English Breakfast -> Oriental English Breakfast
HEINZ Baked Beans -> Beans invented from Native American
Campbell Cream Soup -> Cultural Condensed Cream Soup

Which one annoys you the most?

The Authentic Exotic Pasta Set's innovative design invites viewers to question and reflect on the culinary and cultural narratives they encounter daily. By playfully integrating Easter eggs, such as unconventional cooking directions or origin stories, I challenge the passive consumption of cultural norms. This deliberate juxtaposition encourages a reconsideration of authenticity, origins, and the biases we unknowingly inherit from a globalized world.

Through 'Authentic Exotic,' I aim to provoke dialogue, fostering a deeper understanding of the nuances that shape our perception of the foods we consume and the cultures from which they originate
